Air Greenland welcomes you to Uummannaq (UMD)

The town doesn’t look very special when you see it in the distance through the helicopter window from the runway at Qaarsut. But as you get closer, the coloured houses on the side of the huge Uummannaq Mountain get prettier and prettier. Can people really live like this? In Uummannaq they can, and have done so for many hundreds of years, making a livelihood out of fishing and hunting for seals and whales.

Visit a settlement by boat
Uummannaq lies on an island, so the only way to get there is by boat. Plenty of experiences are waiting in the fjord system. Go ashore in one of the settlements, where you can feel a completely different pace than what you perhaps have already met in Greenland. In the settlement there is a school, a church, a small store and maybe a kiosk – and otherwise just tranquillity. Enjoy the view of the more than 1,000 metre high mountain slopes on both sides. At the head of the fjord is the glacier, one of the fastest-moving in Greenland.

When the fjord ice is ready…
- So are the dog sled drivers. In March and April, temperatures are around minus 10-15 degrees and the sun shines almost round the clock. Rent a set of seal skin clothes and go with the dog sleds! Experience the harsh conditions borne by hunters and fishermen when they catch Greenland halibut with long lines, or hunt seals, shooting from a long distance. We sleep in tents or in hunting cabins and we cook over a Primus after melting snow and ice to get water. It’s not always easy, but the experience is indescribable.
